The Brazilian Collection of Environmental and Industrial Microorganisms (CBMAI) was established in January 2002 at the Multidisciplinary Center for Chemical, Biological, and Agricultural Research (CPQBA/UNICAMP). It was founded with support from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), and the Studies and Projects Financing Agency (FINEP).
CBMAI is a service collection whose policy is to “Perform laboratory activities in the area of environmental and industrial microbiology as a BRC (Biological Resource Center), continuously improving processes and meeting current regulations, NBR ISO/IEC 17025, and OECD Best Practice Guidelines for BRCs. We aim for customer satisfaction through the commitment of senior management and all collaborators to this policy and quality objectives”.
The Collection is dedicated to the preservation, storage, and distribution of microorganisms and associated information, as well as taxonomic characterization and identification. In doing so, it contributes to the scientific, technological, and industrial development of the country. CBMAI serves research, education, industry, and government institutions, also offering scientific-technical advisory, training, and development of research projects.
The team of professionals and collaborators associated with CBMAI is qualified in microbiology, preservation, and systematics of bacteria and fungi, with expertise in polyphasic taxonomy, phylogeny, and the application of culture-independent methods to characterize microbial diversity in environmental samples (e.g., water, soil, oil), raw materials, and industrialized products. CBMAI has been accredited under the NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard since 2020. This is official recognition of its competence to perform 13 technical procedures in 2 assays related to the viability, purity, and identification/authentication of cultivated microbial strains.
CBMAI is located within the Microbial Resources Division (DRM) of CPQBA/UNICAMP, in Paulínia (SP).
