Unicamp Hosts Workshop on Digital Sequence Information (DSI) of Genetic Resources

Unicamp, through its PATGEN commission, will host the “Workshop on Access to Digital Sequence Information (DSI) of Genetic Resources” on August 26th, 2025. The event, which will take place from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the Unicamp Convention Center in Campinas, is aimed at researchers, students, and professionals from Brazilian companies working with genetic resources.

The objective is to discuss the practical changes and the strategic role of Digital Sequence Information (DSI) for research and innovation in the country. The workshop will address the challenge of aligning sustainable development with resource conservation, fostering an essential debate for the future of science and technology in Brazil.

Experts in the field will share experiences in biodiversity, agriculture, and industry. The agenda includes discussions on the evolution of DSI since COP13, national approaches to Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS), and the impacts of the technology on agricultural biotechnology. The management of digital information for genetic research on biodiversity will also be a topic, analyzing fair benefit-sharing mechanisms derived from the use of these resources.

Participation in the event is free, and registration is now open. Guarantee your participation to learn about a topic that is revolutionizing the use of genetic resources and the development of new products.

CPQBA/CBMAI Approved as Germplasm Bank by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock

The Pluridisciplinary Center for Chemical, Biological and Agricultural Research of the State University of Campinas (CPQBA/UNICAMP) had its Germplasm Bank approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), according to Ordinance SDA/MAPA No. 28, of March 19, 2025. This approval represents an important milestone for CBMAI, recognizing its capacity to conserve and make available microorganisms of agricultural interest.

With the approval, CBMAI is authorized to conserve a germplasm bank of microorganisms of agricultural interest and to make available the microbial strains authorized by MAPA for the production of inoculants. This service is crucial for the development of biological inputs for agriculture, contributing to more sustainable and efficient agricultural practices.

The approval by MAPA brings official recognition of the quality and importance of the work carried out by CBMAI in the area of microbial genetic resources. For the collection, this means a strengthening of its research and development activities, in addition to opening new opportunities for collaboration with the productive sector and other research institutions. The expectation is that this approval will further boost innovation in the agricultural sector, with the use of beneficial microorganisms for food production.
